Avesso

A neve escurece.

The Reverse

There comes a moment when the light is reversed.

The snow darkens. The sky closes in, silver. And what was once shadow becomes substance.

I took infrared photographs of a valley where people have dug into the rock to live inside it. The light the camera captures is not the light we see: in it, the living glows and the permanent fades. It is the fragile that shines. The stone, which remains, grows dark.

It is not an effect. It is the world turned inside out, and it expresses what I could not otherwise put into words: what we see, what remains, is the shadow of eternity.
