Quando a Água Baixar

Em maio de 2024, o Guaíba subiu e um pedaço de Porto Alegre desapareceu sob a água. Fotografei a cidade nesse silêncio aflito: o horizonte reduzido a uma linha fina entre céu e rio, os barcos quase afundados, a cidade quase apagada na névoa.

Não busquei o registro da tragédia, as imagens do desespero já existiam aos milhares. Busquei o que a água revelou ao ao retornar ao seu leito: uma cidade reduzida, objetos simbólicos de uma tragédia coletiva.

O barro, uma folha impressa no chão, raízes, um peixe no centro da cidade, uma arma de brinquedo no asfalto. Quando a água baixar, é o que resta e é também a pergunta que a enchente deixou: o que uma cidade se torna, quando a água a devolve.

When the Water Recedes

In May 2024, the Guaíba rose and a part of Porto Alegre disappeared beneath the water. I photographed the city in that anguished silence: the horizon reduced to a thin line between sky and river, the boats almost sunk, the city almost obscured by the mist.

I did not set out to document the tragedy; there were already thousands of images of despair. I sought what the water revealed as it returned to its bed: a diminished city, symbolic objects of a collective tragedy.

Mud, a leaf imprinted on the ground, roots, a fish in the city centre, a toy gun on the tarmac. When the water recedes, this is what remains, and it is also the question the flood has left behind: what does a city become when the water gives it back?
